Essential Oils Changed My Life

I love the feeling I get when my diffuser is going, or I’ve just sprayed a lovely therapeutic scent in the room, or when I stroll past Saje Natural Wellness in the mall (let’s be honest, there’s no stroll past, I always stop in). It instantly brings me to a sense of positivity and calm, a little reminder that everything is okay and to be present. Over the last year my love for essential oils has really grown. I’ve always enjoyed them, I just enjoy them on a different level now. Essential oils are healing, wouldn’t you agree?

In fact, they are extracted from plants, giving them their powerful healing properties. Essential oils are an extract from the root, leaf, bark, or fruit of a plant, and naturally made through distillation (a process that separates oil and water via steaming). Their scent is characterized from the extracted source, making it easy to discover which ones you will enjoy. I’m personally most drawn to tea tree, lavender, rose, sandalwood, and eucalyptus. What’s scents are you drawn to and how do you use them? Let me know by leaving a comment below. I love hearing what other people enjoy and I love trying new things out!

Aromatherapy is a big part of my health regime, and it’s something I look forward to in my day. It’s changed my life! Over the past year I’ve been using essential oils for healing, as opposed to using them for something nice to smell. It’s dramatically improved my emotional, mental, and physical health. For thousands of years, people have used plant oils as healers for various health reasons. Relaxing, boosting immunity, soothing sore muscles, alleviating pain, aiding digestion, mixing into skin/personal care products are a few to name.

I want to chat a bit about my personal experience with essential oils, and the impact aromatherapy has had on my emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

Emotional Health // We go through ups and downs in life, this is inevitable. Having said that, there are ways we can be more prepared to handle the fluctuations, and not let them impact our lives so much. I personally found essential oils are a great tool to use in moments like this. On an emotional level, aromatherapy can help us rediscover our center and bring us back to a better place. For my emotional health, I always aim for aromas that give me a sense of peace and ease when I inhale them. Eucalyptus is one that works really well for me, it always brings me back to me. Next time you feel your emotions getting the best of you, try a few drops of your favourite calming essential oil onto your wrists, rub them together, and inhale 4 deep in and out breaths of the aroma. This always works for me!

Mental Health // Our mental health is so important. What we put in our body and the thoughts we share with ourselves effects us as a whole. When the mind is not right, the body suffers. Mental health is the powerhouse of our well-being. It’s so important to take care of our mind and stay connected to ourselves. Aromatherapy is a great tool for regaining connection and nourishing our mind with happiness. I suffer from periods of anxiety, which come on when there are changes happening in my life, and essential oils have helped me through many mind-chatter-ful nights. My go-to aroma to beat my anxiety is Bergamont because of its citrusy scent, which helps put my anxiousness to rest. Does anyone else find citrusy scents help with anxiety? It makes a huge difference for me! When I feel my anxiety coming on I make sure to get on top of it right away, and aromatherapy is one way I know I can. I’ll normally add 10-15 drops of a citrus essential oil blend to my diffuser to fill the air with positive and uplifting aromas. When we become more connected, we begin to know our triggers and are better equipped to handle them. Connection to our being is so important for understanding what nourishes our mind and body.

Physical Health // Essential oils are amazing for physical health! My favourite ways to use them for my physical health are with my diffuser, dropping them into the bath, or blending them into my skincare products. Another way to incorporate them is by rubbing them on your body (wrists, neck, temples, muscle aches, painful joints). Adding them to the bath is a great way to soothe aches + pains, and diffusing them before bed can help improve quality of sleep. Spa Spirit Purifying Diffuser Blend from Saje is one of my favourite bedtime scents! Not all essential oils are made to be used the same way, so make sure to check if you can use a particular oil topically prior to application. Whenever I purchase essential oils I always double check on how to use it properly.

Incorporating essential oils into our life is a beneficial and affordable way to improve our overall well-being and enhance healing. If you haven’t tried it out yet, or you’re unsure of where to begin, start by popping into your nearby aromatherapy shop and try a few basic essential oils to see which ones you might be drawn to. Once you know what you’re drawn to, you can learn more about the benefits and how to use them properly. Or you can go all out like I did and invest in a diffuser (they typically range from $35 and up) and an essential oils kit. It’s a whole new and amazing world when you start to discover and incorporate essential oils into your lifestyle.

Don’t forget to share your favourite essential oils with me and let me know how you use them in the comments below!
