I will warn you, this blog post is lengthy, but it’s all the good kinds of lengthy and I hope you learn something new!
I am so excited about this post! First off, I’m sharing my favourite things about collagen peptides; second off, I have some exciting news; and last but not least, I’m leaving you with a delicious raw collagen fudge recipe to try out. Excitement all around! Collagen peptides are a daily staple in my diet, and the benefits of collagen are amazing for so many good reasons. Did you know collagen is more beneficial to take orally, as opposed to applying topically as facial creams or body lotions? What is collagen exactly? Let’s get into it!
The Collagen Vibe
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body! It’s made up of 18 amino acids, of which 8 are essential. There are three amino acids (glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) that are the most abundant and give collagen its unique functional properties.
Anti-aging benefits // Collagen makes up 70% of our skin! As we age, our collagen production decreases, so adding it into our diet helps boost production and protect our skin. Collagen increases skin elasticity + hydration, suppresses UV induced skin damage/photoaging, decreases depths of wrinkles, reduces cellulite, eliminates stretch marks, and is more effective to take orally as opposed to using topically! You may notice collagen is used in skin creams and body lotions, however, it does not get absorbed by the skin when applied topically. In order to gain the benefits collagen has, it must be ingested in peptide form to promote synthesis of new collagen fibers in the skin.
Reduced joint pain // A decline in collagen can be the source of bone + joint degradation which can lead conditions such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis. Science has shown that taking collagen orally can help to prevent and reverse these ailments by building and supporting bones + joints. Collagen peptides also improve mobility + flexibility, physical activity, and reduces injury/recovery time. 90% of the organic component of our bones is comprised of collagen. Collagen fibers form the protein matrix in our bones while calcium is embedded within this matrix to provide rigidity. Studies show that as we age, our bones can lose 50% of their strength and have a 35% loss in elasticity as a result of collagen loss. Any breakdown of bone collagen directly causes a loss of bone strength. Clinical research has also shown that daily supplementation with collagen peptides can increase bone mineral density, especially in calcium-deficient or osteopenic subjects. Bone mineral density is key to preventing bone fractures.
Weight loss support // Collagen provides greater satiety (over other proteins in the same quantity) due to its distinctive structure of protein peptides. As we age, our bodies lose muscle mass and often replace it with fat. This loss of muscle correlates with excess excretion of nitrogen in urine and increased dietary protein needs in elderly people. Research has shown collagen protein supplementation is effective in helping aging individuals maintain lean body mass and preserve nitrogen balance. In addition, cellulite becomes more visible as our skin stretches, thins, and sags. Collagen supplementation has been clinically proven to increase skin-collagen expression and improve elasticity and thickness, which is important for hiding fat cells that lie underneath the skin.
Gut healing // Collagen helps to prevent heartburn, stomach ulcers, and other digestive conditions caused by an overly acidic environment by regulating stomach acid secretion. In addition, taking collagen helps digestion by holding water in the intestine, helping move food through the GI tract more smoothly.

Add collagen peptides to your next…
Coffee // Bulletproof blends are my favourite! It’s so easy to elevate your bulletproof coffee with a scoop of collagen.
Matcha // I love my matcha blended. I’ll make it as I normally would, then I’ll pour it into a small blender with a scoop of collagen peptides and blend for a few seconds. This also makes matcha super frothy.
Herbal tea // Mix a scoop of collagen into plain tea for some extra love.
Lemon water // Lemon water helps increase collagen synthesis, so mixing collagen into your lemon water amps things up even more!
Smoothies // Adding collagen into smoothie blends is such an easy + delicious way to increase collagen intake.
Raw baking // Collagen can easily be added to any raw recipes, like energy balls or raw fudge.

- In a small bowl, whisk all ingredients together and pour mixture using a spatula into prepared pan.
- Refrigerate until solid (approx 30 mins – 1 hour), if you’re in a rush then pop them into the freezer for 15 minutes to speed things up.
- Once fudge is ready, remove it with the parchment paper from the pan and slice into squares. I peeled parchment paper away and sliced my fudge on a small cutting board.
